The Reception and Impact of Hans Vaihinger’s Fictionalism (The Philosophy of »As If«) in Literature, and Literary, Art, and Cultural Theory
The project represents the first systematic, historical investigation of the vast reception and impact of The Philosophy of »As If« (1911) by Hans Vaihinger in philosophy and literature, and in art, literary, and cultural theory from the interwar period to the present. Recent revisiting of the part played by Vaihinger’s theorems in literary and cultural theory and in philosophy has made a case for approaches that go beyond research into its historical-philological reception and instead reflect on the reasons for the role of fictionalism as a source of inspiration.
Alice Stašková is Professor of German Literature at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. She received her Ph.D. at the University of Prague (2005) and habilitated at the Free University Berlin (2015). She was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow in 2007–08 and Max Kade Professor at Vanderbilt University (Nashville) in Spring 2015.

Kann Erdachtes, das offensiv der Erfahrung widerspricht, Wirkungen im Realen zeitigen? Das 1911 publizierte Buch »Die Philosophie des Als Ob« von Hans Vaihinger bejaht dies emphatisch: Fingieren ist dazu da, die Realität zu erkennen, sie zu durchdringen und folglich zu meistern. Diese Idee fand unter Zeitgenoss*innen ungemeine Zustimmung. Und sie inspiriert – und irritiert – bis heute.
